Computer errors may occur due to several reasons. It is essential to follow a methodical approach to effectively troubleshoot computer errors and resolve them. Listed below are some of the basic steps that you can follow to resolve computer errors:

  1. Backup your data: If your computer is unstable, it is best that you backup your data before proceeding with the troubleshooting steps discussed below. This is because there are several computer errors that may eventually render your computer unbootable and you may be at a risk of losing your data while troubleshooting your error.
  2. Check the hardware and system configuration of your computer: Many errors, such as the stop 0x00000024 error, occur due to incorrect hardware installation. This is the reason why, it is essential that you open your PC and ensure that all hardware components are properly seated in their slots. You must ensure that all your data and power cables are working fine and devices, such as SCSI hard drives are terminated properly. After doing this, turn on your computer and open the Device Manager from Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager. Here, ensure that all hardware devices are properly configured on the system and your device drivers are updated. You may use the Device Manager utility to launch a troubleshoot wizard to find out specific problems with a particular device.
  3. Update your computer: Operating system, software applications, and device driver manufacturers release regular updates that you must install to patch up any security vulnerabilities or to add new features to the product. Microsoft Windows XP and Vista computers comprise an automatic update feature that enables you to automatically download and install updates for Microsoft updates on your computer. However, if there is a problem with this feature itself, you may encounter errors, such as the svchost.exe application error. If this happens, you may have to disable this feature and then attempt to manually install Microsoft updates using the Microsoft Update Website.
  4. Check the system for virus and spyware infections: If errors start occurring all of a sudden and your system performance deteriorates, the chances are quite high that your system is infected with a malicious virus or spyware program. In this case, update your antivirus and antispyware tools and run a full system scan. To ensure that the scan is more effective, perform it by starting your computer in Safe mode.
  5. Scan, clean, repair, and defrag your registry: Computer errors may also occur due to the existence of incorrect entries within the registry. Your Windows operating system comprises two utilities that help you check your registry and perform some level of registry maintenance. These two tools are Registry Editor (regedit) and Reg.exe. Registry Editor is a GUI tool that you can use to view, browse and perform edits in the entire registry tree. Whereas, reg.exe is a command-line utility that is useful when you are unable to boot your computer in Windows mode. You can perform almost all registry maintenance activities using Reg.exe that you can you perform using the Registry Editor tool. For instance, you may use the REG QUERY command to query a single or range of registry keys. Although these tools are useful, they do have their limitations. This is the reason why, experts recommend that you use a reliable and user-friendly, third-party registry cleaner tool to scan, clean, repair, and defrag your registry on a regular basis.
